The
founders of Ikonisys, a New Haven-based biotechnology
firm, launched an innovative product in a growing
global market for cell-based diagnostics.

You might refer to New Haven-based Ikonisys as
a rather precocious child.
The seven-year-old company has grown from a sound
idea to manufacturing and selling a broad robotic
technology platform, which may well transform
cell-based diagnostics.
“Really, you can make the comparison between
a company and the development of a human being,”
says Petros Tsipouras, M.D., chairman of the board
and CEO of Ikonisys, as he sits in his airy office
at 5 Science Park. “A company grows and
evolves, and just like the needs of an infant
are different from the needs of an adult, the
needs of a company during the start up phase are
different as it moves into the product development
and sales phase.” He adds, “I would
say we are in late childhood right now, and we
have had some growing pains. But we see the future,
and we believe the sky is the limit—just
like a child does.”
The genesis of Ikonisys is a professional collaboration
between Tsipouras and doctors and medical researchers
Michael Kilpatrick and Triantafyllos Tafas, which
began when all three were working at the University
of Connecticut Health Center in Farmington. The
men joined forces to create the privately held
bio-technological company in 1999. The mission
statement is quite simple really—to become
the standard in robotic digital microscopy for
cell testing and provide laboratories with cost-effective,
walk-away functionality.
